Vision: A society in which all the vulnerable and ill, especially those with HIV/AIDS, are appropriately supported and are able to enjoy quality of life.

Mission: The Caring Network empowers individuals to care for the vulnerable and ill, especially those affected by HIV/AIDS, through the provision of training, capacity building, networking and community action.
    Strategic Objectives:
  • To provide individuals from previously disadvantaged communities, particularly those who are unemployed, with training in life skills and healthcare.
  • To establish a network of care groups to care for the sick, particularly those with HIV/AIDS.
  • To provide a professionally supervised home-based care service.
  • To provide ongoing support, capacity building and training to these care groups and home-based carers.
  • To promote this particular developmental model of care and assist other groups in establishing similar networks.
  • To develop a culture of caring and spirituality.
  • To co-operate to the fullest degree with organizations and individuals with similar, or related, aims and objectives.
  • To use appropriate lobbying and advocacy strategies to ensure the effective delivery of public health services to the vulnerable and ill, and in support of home-based carers.

CN is contracted annually with the Western Cape Department of Health to provide community home based services with suitably qualified carers in designated areas. The European Union entered into a contractual relationship with DOH 4 years ago to strengthen the primary health care available to previously disadvantaged South Africans The Western Cape pioneered the implementation of this program and Caring Network is regarded as best practice by provincial and national DOH. Currently, there are 76 contracted NPOs in the Province.  Funding covers a stipend for half-day employment for 120 carers and a 4 nursing coordinators, to offer integrated health care to patients linked to primary health care facilities, and in so doing reduce pressure on hospital bed occupancy, monitor and support those on treatment and train families to look after the ill, referring when necessary. The budget of R2.2 m for 2008-2009 allocated to CN funds personnel, uniforms, admin costs and some transport costs. Additional funds are required to meet running costs of the Centre in Khayelitsha, the top-up salaries for professional staff working full-time, and for the care for the carer program.

The Champion Carers
Carers

Purpose

  • To provide health services in the community in order to promote, restore and maintain a maximum level of comfort.
  • These services will include tasks around illness prevention, promotion of health, therapy, rehabilitation and palliative care.
  • Each client contact is approximated to be 45 minutes, including walking to client and record keeping. The ratio of clients to carer is determined by the category of illness of the client, and will vary from 4-6. The department requires that we focus on category iii clients.
  • Carers report for duty daily, work strictly under nursing supervision and allocated care plan, ensure all clients are linked to local health facility and referral protocol is observed; assist clients with social problems; keep accurate and updated records; adhere to Universal Precautions and standard policies of infection control; utilise infection control equipment provided; keep kit bag safe and replenished regularly

Tasks

  • Empower and assist the family to care for the client
  • Provide health education on the condition of the client
  • Refer client to a clinic/ hospital/ social worker or other, as appropriate
  • Assist with personal hygiene of client
  • Care of pressure points to avoid bed sores
  • Attend to basic exercise of client to improve circulation
  • Ensure a clean environment for the client
  • Supervise and monitor clients on treatment regimes
  • Attend to wound care under nursing supervision
  • Provide emotional and spiritual care
  • Make  suitable follow-up visits on bereavement
  • Provide IMCI services to mothers and children under the age of 5 years

Message from the Chairperson.

What is Caring Network? It is an organisation made up of woman with a genuine spirit of helping, healing and caring influenced by Christian values. It cares for those in need, through the HBC services and other initiatives, but CN also cares for its fellow Caring Networkers, by encouraging the furthering of the education and skills. CN changes of lives of those who belong to the organisation and who they touch.
