Outline of services

CN is contracted annually with the Western Cape Department of Health to provide community home based services with suitably qualified carers in designated areas. The European Union entered into a contractual relationship with DOH 4 years ago to strengthen the primary health care available to previously disadvantaged South Africans The Western Cape pioneered the implementation of this program and Caring Network is regarded as best practice by provincial and national DOH. Currently, there are 76 contracted NPOs in the Province.  Funding covers a stipend for half-day employment for 120 carers and a 4 nursing coordinators, to offer integrated health care to patients linked to primary health care facilities, and in so doing reduce pressure on hospital bed occupancy, monitor and support those on treatment and train families to look after the ill, referring when necessary. The budget of R2.2 m for 2008-2009 allocated to CN funds personnel, uniforms, admin costs and some transport costs. Additional funds are required to meet running costs of the Centre in Khayelitsha, the top-up salaries for professional staff working full-time, and for the care for the carer program.
